New Broadcast Team in Madden NFL 13

Madden NFL 13 will feature a brand new announcers. The CBS duo of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will call the action in the booth. Nantz does play-by-play while Simms provides analysis â€" the two will be entering their ninth year together this coming season. It’s unclear whether they will act as a second broadcast team or if they are replacing Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth but the likelihood is those two are being pushed out.
Gus wears on me quickly but I still hope they go with two teams for variety.

I wouldn't bet on that. Glad to hear they're actually recording new commentary this year though.

Pretty similar in what we are seeing in NCAA 12 but I can't complain about that.
Brent, you'll be glad to know that the gameplay controls are exactly the same with Madden and NCAA Football this year. I never understood why some of the basic controls (for example, the pump fake) were different in both games.
Yeah, that was a pet peeve. Glad to see they are the same.
Lots of talk about Madden possibly using real-time physics in its gameplay engine this year. I'd be shocked if EA added such a major feature this late in this generation's cycle.

The “monumental change to gameplay†for Madden NFL 13 has been announced and it’s the debut of a physics-driven system known as “Infinity Engineâ€.
Touted as having an unlimited number of animations and completely organic actions the gameplay will be transformed due to the new engine. Player mass, speed, and momentum will determine the collisions and physical attributes will matter more than ever because of this. With no pre-determined outcomes users will have full control of the players through and after contact.
More on the physics engine later today with more extensive information and a trailer still to come.

The reveal of NHL 13′s GM Connected mode did in fact largely spoil that of Connected Careers for Madden NFL 13. The mode essentially combines standard Franchise, Online Franchise, and Superstar Modes into a single initiative with the user choosing to be a player, control a team in a traditional manner or as a coach, and even integrates legends as an option to choose from to run through a career with.
Up to 32 teams can be user-controlled so again this is an expansion on what Online Franchise was with Franchise also being playable solo of course. When using an individual player XP is earned to use on upgrading them throughout the career with a checklist meant to lead to a hopeful Hall of Fame inclusion. A new story engine and fake Twitter feed adds to the immersion of the league in general. PCs, tablets, and smartphones will also be able to access the careers for some level of functionality that hasn’t quite been made clear yet.

Overall, Madden remains quite raw. Give it another year, and Madden may at least be a true contender. [Oct 2012, p.72]

Some really fun stuff posted at OS.
One of those EA Game Changers is doubting the reviewer had the game (yeah magazines never get early copies of games for review)
The review was by Kat Bailey, a female game reviewer. (Cooties)
A self proclaimed RPG Nerd (I seem to recall Bill Abner is a board gaming/RPG Nerd, does that make his reviews of football games invalid)
so one might take this review with a grain of salt. (It is just a review, some of those OS dudes need to climb off the edge)
For more fun check out the thread and thank heavens for Aholbert32 for injecting some sanity into the discussion.

:o that OS thread is mentally challenged.
The people complaining about the low review score will be the same people ripping the game two weeks after it's out.
There's a lot of good info to be found at OS, but unfortunately, 80% of the forum posts are nothing but drama.
Madden demo confirmed for August 14th.
Game Changers are the worst posters. Just a bunch of guys getting free trips to Tiburon and doing all the work covering EA's asses on forums. Not just at OS, they are everywhere.
More demo details from Steve.
The Madden NFL 13 demo includes the New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks vs. Washington Redskins.
UPDATE #2: You can choose difficulty settings. 5 min quarters and it's an entire game. It will also have full commentary.
Pretty good stuff for a demo. Outside of having the Giants in it. ;)
Downloaded the demo this morning and played a quarter before going to work - I don't think I can go back to playing NCAA Football now.
Thanks for reminding me about the demo, downloading it now. Is it really that much better than NCAA?
I have Sleeping Dogs coming in today also, lots to do.
I still see myself playing plenty of NCAA. I like what I see so far from the demo but the new physics have a lot to be worked out. My RB gets tackled and half of the time it is like he is rocketed to the ground. In a few cases I am barley even touched and fall. I think they have the start of something good but it will take some time to get used to.
I can actually SPIN in this game. I have no clue what they did to NCAA but you can't accomplish a spin move, which is my bread and butter.
One thing that annoys me with Madden and in turn makes NCAA more enjoyable is playing defense locked into one player. Why Madden does not offer this option is beyond be,

I made the mistake of looking at that post yesterday and had to stop reading it halfway through. I understand that everyone's entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't mean I have to read it. Some people will never be satisfied with ANY game and should consider another hobby.

It seems Madden and NCAA Football do NOT have identical control schemes - the pre-snap controls are different in each game (line shifts, audibles). I'm not really annoyed by that since I preferred Madden's pre-snap controls and was disappointed they weren't used in NCAA Football this year.

I'm sorry, but this quote is just totally ridiculous:
How do the players move, though? Um, like they've moved for the last five years, pretty much. What about that new Infinity Engine to generate unique tackle animations? That's 99% horseshit. Seriously, I didn't see one tackle animation that looked unique or impossible with the old engine, and I played a game that consisted of probably 40 plays.I've seen so many unique tackles and interactions EVERY time I've played, and not just with the ball carrier and tacklers. I actually had my RB trip over the foot of my offensive lineman, fall into another offensive lineman and then finally fall down. The BIG point that he's missing is that some of the animations were present in the old engine, BUT they were pre-determined. The animations in M13 play out based on real-time physics. I love how my RB can get hit, lose his balance, regain it and start running again and not have it based off a canned animation. What's even more impressive is that the cut scenes after each play also follow the same rules of real-time physics - I've seen players trip over other players laying the ground during these cut scenes.
I had some doubts about EA pulling this off, but I'm really impressed with what they've shown in the just the demo. I have no love for EA, but sometimes you have to give credit where it's due, and they certainly deserve some credit for the job they did on Madden this year.
Edit: Just wanted to mention that I'm playing the demo on "Very Slow" which feels much better to me.

If you go into the settings you can revert to the Madden 10 pre-snap option and they will be the same as NCAA.
I prefer Madden's pre-snap options. Too bad NCAA doesn't have an option to switch to Madden's pre-snap controls.
I'm starting to get excited about Tuesday's Madden release. EA has already announced the first patch will be available two weeks after release (9/11).
Well then here is something to wet that appetite.

Closing Comments
Madden NFL 13 does something the Madden franchise hasn't done in years: it makes me want to keep playing. Yes, the commentators will repeat themselves and funky animations are going to pop up, but the game as a whole is so good. The TV presentation, the refined gameplay, the more lifelike physics -- it all adds up to Madden NFL 13 being something truly special.

Presentation
This looks, feels and sounds more like an NFL broadcast than any game before it. The main menu hub puts everything at your fingertips and makes it feel like one unified product.
8.5
Graphics
The crowd is still pixelated and there can be wonky handoffs, but physics are an excellent addition and the game looks stunning in motion for the most part.
9
Sound
The commentators will repeat themselves, but the new adlibbed style sounds more natural. Love the orchestral score running through the game. Stadium and on-field sounds add realism.
9
Gameplay
EA added a lot of tweaks that might not jump out at you, but they make the game feel better than ever. The new experience point system for Connected Careers allows you to build your perfect player.
9
Lasting Appeal
Different Connected Careers with friends should keep you going to see what players and dynasties you can create.

Off to download ze full version with my handy dandy season pass.
Must admit that I'm a little jealous right now.
Just finished downloading getting ready to play in a few minutes. Going to put a whipping on the Cowboys with my Steelers.
1st game just for grins I played on the default settings (Pro bumped to 8 min) and annihilated the Cowboys 63-35. Mendenhal had 450 yard and 8 TD's. Ben still had 200 yards passing on a ton of play action passes.
So second game I go to my default (All Pro 8 min) and try to use the same ground attack against an evenly match Broncos, on the road, in heavy snow. The snow slowed Manning down, not to mention the 50,000 audibles he called in the game which ate up a ton of the clock. Buffalo, Buffalo, Buffalo audible will haunt my dreams tonight. Mendenhal rushed for a respectable 165 yards but had a fumble early which the Broncos took back for a TD on the first possession. We were able to go over the 225 mark thanks to some good runns by my backups because Mendenhal was injured for a third of the game and some of the time he was on the field his stats were severely degraded. I had the game won 17-14 as there was one second on the clock and Denver had 70 yards of pasture to be able to get a TD. So I get in the Quarter, 3 deep and figure the game is won. Just standing around with a middle linebacker and Peyton throws one as deep as he can. Completely open WR catch and run for the win. :'(
My deep cover guy was in a FREAKING ZONE coverage on the far side of the field and for some reason he decided to follow a guy running a post and ends up positioned in the middle of the field. I really wanted to throw my controller but it was a good game of football and the running in the game was some of the best I ever had in a Madden game. I earned every yard and the game actually let me run outside and use spins, two things impossible to do in NCAA (I am hoping that is what the tuning fixed today but I doubt it). The AI RB still needs some work, they will do some oddly timed jukes when they open field in front of them.
The physics still need a lot of work but it feels different than NCAA. In some cases for the better, in others (odd collisions, cannon hits dropping a player way too fast) not so much. Standard camera it is for me, I like zoomed cameras but this was is zoomed in a bit too much and far to low to the ground. User custom cameras, developers, they used to exist.
Still no auto-save in the game just boggles the mind. I tried Connect Career tonight with Pittsburgh using Mike Tomlin. Skipped all the pre-season games and started off @ Denver. This game was much easier than the last, rolling to a 21-6 win. Peyton was horrible, throwing a couple picks and numerous incompletions, mostly due to my hits on receivers jarring the ball lose and he threw the ball away 3 or 4 times.
Pre season is pretty simple as a coach, cut players, practice and there were some trades on the board. I waited for the regular season and picked up a few free agents (FB/TE). Practice is just a situational that varies on difficulties and gets you player progress points. You can sim practice and I did after the first one. Giving player points is really tedious and I just left it to the CPU do it after the first time. You can do them weekly, every 4 weeks or at the end of season. It upgrades the player one point assuming you have enough points. The good attributes are generally locked as you need a ton of points for them. Probably would be better doing them myself but it just to time consuming going through each player and the point system was a tad confusing and I was not really that interested in learning it. One example was a CB early on had the option of gainging a carrying point (pretty useless for that position) or stamina.
Is the CPU playcalling any better than previous editions? I've been reading some unflattering stuff about it and clock management.

You obviously aren't a fan of real football then because Bill Harris did an extremely in depth and accurate experiment a few years ago that showed the speed of the video game is far too slow compared to actual football and the only way to really play it was game speed slider at 100%.

Clock management is bad. I have had times in both games with Denver lining up on 3rd down and spiking it to stop the clock. In that same amount of time they could just run a play. CPU playcalling is not something I have played that close of an attention to (only have three games under my belt). I am definitely getting a bunch of sacks, especially when I am in a zone blitz. The running attack is pretty poor and they give up on it pretty quick. In both games against Denver Peyton threw the ball away too many times and in many cases none of my defenders were in range of him.
Penalties are also a rare occurrence so far. Like NCAA 13 you are almost guaranteed to see one hold on a return and one or two holds when passing the ball and that is it.

I guess I'm not according to Bill Harris. I wouldn't be considered a real gamer by him anyway because I actually enjoy my games.
I normally do not care for the youtube backseat drivers bitching about EA games with replays of one or two plays because crazy stuff happens in games. That said this guy took the proper steps in showing that ratings really do not make a big difference in certain instances (OL/DL play). He goes in a edits the attributes to make a weak tiny OT with no blocking skills.

Brent, was today's update new or was it available on Friday?
I do not remember if there was an update with the Season Ticket version. I know they promised a launch day patch that fixed the blitz cheat and open WR dropping passes. Still waiting for my copy to show.
* Just looked at my Season Ticket Madden folder and there is no file for an update. Just updated rosters.
I forgot to mention how happy I am that they finally got rid of the matrix-style passing camera that they started using in Madden 10. Madden 11 and 12 toned it down a little, but luckily Madden 13 completely got rid of it.
What threshold is everyone using? I don't usually touch that slider, but it set it to 35 and liked the results over my past few games. It's nice not having a defensive lineman run down my halfback in the open field.
Just left that on default but you have a good idea to slow it down. Will give it a shot next time I play.

Downloaded the demo this morning and played a quarter before going to work - I don't think I can go back to playing NCAA Football now.
I stand corrected. I'm really enjoying Madden this year, but played a few games of NCAA 13 over the past few days and really enjoyed the change of pace.
Still having fun with Madden and finding myself using a play I'd never use before - the draw play. Draws never seemed to work in previous Maddens, but I have good luck with it when it's used at an appropriate time. I'm also forcing myself to play as a LB on every defensive play, as opposed to a DE. This makes a lot of my games closer than they should be, especially with TE's that catch the ball a lot. Former Giant TE Kevin Boss kicked my ass in my game against the Chiefs.
Seeing the same thing myself, in both Madden and NCAA with draws. I even notice in the NCAA loading screen they seem to emphasize the draw (Coaching Tips) more this year. I have good TE's and in Madden they will tear you apart.
Lame-ass update coming out tomorrow for Madden:
The update will include an instant starter option for created “Players†in Connected Careers, numerous stability fixes, and improvements to the Game Face feature.
Here’s a short breakdown of what was included in title update #2 that released today. As always, we’ll be watching the forums and looking for your feedback.
- Added an Instant Start option to Connected Careers as a player
- Numerous commentary improvements to address when lines trigger and what they say.
- Added a trade notification in CCM for the NFL Draft
- Fixed social media sharing post-game to address spacing issues
- Improved the GameFace feature
- Fixed Challenge Audio to make the appropriate call
- Improved Physics Get-up post play
- Adjusted created players in Connected Careers so that they always have high progression grades despite their backstory choices
- Fixed defensive assignment issues against the CPU AI when users were in Man Coverage
- Increased the chances to trade for a CPU team’s starter
- Adjusted the scouting development trait in CCM to display as (Slow, Medium, Fast, or Superstar) instead of 0-3.
- Added the ability to post results from H2H MUT games on Facebook/Twitter.
- Numerous stability issues around the game in general were also included in the update to improve the overall experience and Connected Careers specifically.
"Improved Physics Get-up post play"
They actually did a pretty good job with this. I played my first post-patch game today and it didn't look like a bunch of drunks tripping over themselves after each play. While it may not affect gameplay at all, it's brings a bit more realism to the game and presentation.
I finally got around to uploading some of my better plays:

Yeah, it really caught me by surprise. I can only imagine the look on my face when I saw him keep going.
If you're enjoying the Vita version, you really owe it to yourself to try 13 on one of the consoles because it's light years better than last year's game. Having said that, it must be great have a good Madden game on a hand-held. If next year's sports games on the Vita are comparable to their console versions, I'd probably pick one up.
For those on the fence, Amazon is selling Madden 13 (XB360 or PS3) for only $39.99 today.

I'm so glad I won't have to listen to people whine about not being about to edit players anymore.
I'm just happy that they fixed this:
Fixed an issue where someone who attempted to bull rush with the R stick once the ball was snapped activated run commit.
Although that bug got me using a linebacker again on defense.
